Text
- Deset let so odpadne vode iz tovarne tekle naravnost v reko pod vasjo. Ribe so izginile, ob bregu pa so ostale saje in škodljive snovi v blatu. Ko so meritve pokazale, kaj se dogaja, so tovarni naložili gradnjo čistilne naprave. Prostovoljci so tri leta čistili breg in zasadili novo drevje. Reko jim je uspelo oživiti, čeprav nekatere vrste rib niso prišle nazaj. Danes je dolina krajinski park in ob njej stoji tabla z napisom Ne meči smeti. For ten years waste water from the factory flowed straight into the river below the village. The fish disappeared, and soot and harmful impurities remained in the silt by the shore. When measurements showed what was happening, the factory was ordered to build a treatment plant. Volunteers cleaned the shore for three years and planted new trees. They managed to restore the river, although some fish species did not return. Today the valley is a nature reserve, and nearby stands a sign reading “Do not litter”.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?
B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
