How it works

Unit forty-four is the most English one in the course: බාස්කට් බෝල් (bāskaṭ bōl), වොලිබෝල් (volibōl), ජිම් එක (jim eka), ඩම්බෙල් (ḍambel), විසිල් එක (visil eka), ෆිනිෂ් එක (finiṣ eka). A borrowing in Sinhala is not a guest but a full citizen, and it has a grammar of its own. Its main knot is එක (eka).

Why එක. A Sinhala noun must have a tail to take a case: ගෙදර (gedara) → ගෙදරට (gedaraṭa). An English word has no tail, and එක ('one, thing') is put in its place: ජිම් එකජිම් එකට (to the gym), ජිම් එකේ (at the gym), ජිම් එකෙන් (from the gym). There is nothing to attach a case to directly, and that is why 'ජිම්ට' is never said.

When එක is not needed. For three classes of words. People: ක්ලයන්ට් (klayanṭ), සප්ලයර් (saplayar), සෙකියුරිටි (sekiyuriṭi), මෙකැනික් (mekænik) — the animate has its own pair of tails, -ට (-ṭa) and -ගෙන, and එක is superfluous for them. Kinds of sport and notions: ටෙනිස් (ṭenis), බොක්සිං (boksiṁ), යෝගා (yōgā), ජිම්නාස්ටික් (jimnāsṭik) — they are not counted in pieces. The plural: ඩම්බෙල්, උපකරණ (upakaraṇa). The difference is audible: විසිල් එක — that very whistle, බොක්සිං — boxing in general.

A verb from English. It is made through කරනවා (karanavā): කන්ෆර්ම් කරනවා (to confirm), රීසයිකල් කරනවා (to recycle), රිවිෂන් කරනවා (to revise). The English stem never changes — only කරනවා changes all the time: කන්ෆර්ම් කළා (kanfarm kaḷā), කන්ෆර්ම් කරන්න (kanfarm karanna), කන්ෆර්ම් කරන එක (kanfarm karana eka). It is impossible to slip here, and that is why this seam is so durable.

A feature from English. It is taken as is and put before the word: ලෝකල් කඩේ (a local shop), ෆ්‍රෙෂ් මාළු (fresh fish). The tail -යි, which a Sinhala feature takes as a predicate, is usually not attached to the English one.

And a word of warning. English in a Sinhala mouth changes its sound, and it should not be pulled back toward the English pronunciation: ෆැක්ටරි එක (fækṭari eka) is 'faktari eka', ප්ලාස්ටර් එක (plāsṭar eka) — 'plaastar eka'. Read it the way it is written in Sinhala letters: said the English way, it will be understood worse than said the Sinhala way.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
