Four “no”s: නෑ, නෙවෙයි, නැති and නො-

The course already knows නෑ and knows බෑ. The unit about argument demands two more, and without them one cannot contradict in Sinhala: 'this is not a fact' cannot be said through නෑ at all. For example: “මේක මතයක් නෙවෙයි, කරුණක්. ඒත් මම එකඟ නෑ” — This is not an opinion but a fact. But I do not agree. A rule from the Sinhala course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

The course already knows නෑ (nǣ) and knows බෑ (bǣ). The unit about argument demands two more, and without them one cannot contradict in Sinhala: 'this is not a fact' cannot be said through නෑ at all.

නෑ negates an action and existence. මම දන්නේ නෑ (I do not know), එයා ආවේ නෑ (he did not come), සල්ලි නෑ (there is no money). Note the tail on the verb: before නෑ it becomes -ේ — දන්නවා (dannavā) → දන්නේ (dannē), ආවා (āvā) → ආවේ (āvē). This is the beginner’s main mistake: saying ආවා නෑ (āvā nǣ) instead of ආවේ නෑ (āvē nǣ).

නෙවෙයි (neveyi) negates not an action but an equation. Where the predicate is a noun, only it works: මේක මතයක් නෙවෙයි (mēka matayak neveyi), කරුණක් (this is not an opinion but a fact), ඒක පවුලේ උත්සවයක් (ēka pavulē utsavayak), ලොකු පාටියක් නෙවෙයි (loku pāṭiyak neveyi), මම විද්‍යාඥයෙක් නෙවෙයි. It also builds two turns of this wave: වගේ නෙවෙයි ('unlike') and හරියටම එහෙම නෙවෙයි ('not quite').

නැති (næti) — negation inside a noun phrase. The English 'without' and 'non-' before a modifier: සල්ලි නැති කෙනෙක් (a person without money), වැඩක් නැති දෙයක් (a useless thing), නැති දෙයක් ගැන කතා කරන්න එපා (næti deyak gæna katā karanna epā). From here also the familiar නැත්නම් ('otherwise, if not') — it is නැති plus නම් (nam).

නො- — a prefix, and only to features and participles. සතුටු (satuṭu) → නොසතුටු (discontented), නින්ද යාම (ninda yāma) → නින්ද නොයාම (sleeplessness), කර (kara) → නොකර (not doing). It is not attached to a finite verb: 'I did not come' is ආවේ නෑ, not නොආවා.

And next to them stand two prohibitions that are not negations. එපා (epā) — 'no need': සද්දේ වැඩි කරන්න එපා (saddē væḍi karanna epā), hence එපා කියනවා ('to refuse'). බෑ — 'must not, cannot': වෙන්න බෑ (it cannot be), මෙතන සිගරට් බොන්න බෑ (metana sigaraṭ bonna bǣ). The difference is simple: එපා forbids, බෑ speaks of impossibility, and both were taken apart separately in the note about ඕන (ōna) and පුළුවන් (puḷuvan).

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

How to say no in Sinhala: nae, neweyi, naethi?

The course already knows නෑ and knows බෑ. The unit about argument demands two more, and without them one cannot contradict in Sinhala: 'this is not a fact' cannot be said through නෑ at all.

Nae vs neweyi?

නෑ negates an action and existence. මම දන්නේ නෑ (I do not know), එයා ආවේ නෑ (he did not come), සල්ලි නෑ (there is no money). Note the tail on the verb: before නෑ it becomes -ේ — දන්නවා → දන්නේ, ආවා → ආවේ. This is the beginner’s main mistake: saying ආවා නෑ instead of ආවේ නෑ.

Why the verb takes the tail e before nae?

නෙවෙයි negates not an action but an equation. Where the predicate is a noun, only it works: මේක මතයක් නෙවෙයි, කරුණක් (this is not an opinion but a fact), ඒක පවුලේ උත්සවයක්, ලොකු පාටියක් නෙවෙයි, මම විද්‍යාඥයෙක් නෙවෙයි. It also builds two turns of this wave: වගේ නෙවෙයි ('unlike') and හරියටම එහෙම…

Bae vs epa in Sinhala?

නැති — negation inside a noun phrase. The English 'without' and 'non-' before a modifier: සල්ලි නැති කෙනෙක් (a person without money), වැඩක් නැති දෙයක් (a useless thing), නැති දෙයක් ගැන කතා කරන්න එපා. From here also the familiar නැත්නම් ('otherwise, if not') — it is නැති plus නම්.

The Sinhala prefix no- and what it attaches to?

නො- — a prefix, and only to features and participles. සතුටු → නොසතුටු (discontented), නින්ද යාම → නින්ද නොයාම (sleeplessness), කර → නොකර (not doing). It is not attached to a finite verb: 'I did not come' is ආවේ නෑ, not නොආවා.

What does it look like in an example sentence Sinhala?

“මේක මතයක් නෙවෙයි, කරුණක්. ඒත් මම එකඟ නෑ” (mēka matayak neveyi, karuṇak. ēt mama ekanga nǣ) — This is not an opinion but a fact. But I do not agree. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
