Yesterday we went to the shopping center. I took a cart and bought several packs and shampoo. My sister needed a wristwatch, but those turned out more expensive. On another display we chose the ones that were cheaper. The cashier asked whether there was a bonus card, and I gave it. Having come home, I kept the receipt, because if necessary a return can be arranged.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the author take at the entrance?
  2. Why were the first watches not taken?
  3. What did the cashier ask about?
  4. Why did the author keep the receipt?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Sinhala?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
