මම සිංහල ඉගෙන ගන්න විදිය
A short in Sinhala text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. I started the Sinhala course a year ago. At first I could not write the letters; now I can. Every day I learn words and…
Text
හැබැයි කඩේට ගිහිල්ලා සිංහලෙන් කතා කරන්න මට පුළුවන් වුණා.mama siṁhala kōs ekak paṭan gattē avuruddakaṭa kalin. mulinma maṭa akuru liyanna bæri vuṇā, dæn puḷuvan. mama hæma davasema vacana kaṭapāḍam karanavā, saha saṭahan liyanavā. vyākaraṇa tāma amāruyi, hæbæyi uccāraṇaya honda velā. gurutumā kiyanavā piyavaren piyavara yanna kiyalā. maṭa tāma nokaḍavā katā karanna bæhæ, ēkaṭa tava prækṭis ōnē. hæbæyi kaḍēṭa gihillā siṁhalen katā karanna maṭa puḷuvan vuṇā.I started the Sinhala course a year ago. At first I could not write the letters; now I can. Every day I learn words and write notes. The grammar is still difficult, but the pronunciation has become better. The teacher says to go step by step. I cannot yet speak fluently; for that more practice is needed. But I did manage to go to the shop and explain myself in Sinhala.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Sinhala?
A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
