Alyp berdim or alyp aldym: done for whom
In the shop and in talk about things Kazakh keeps answering a question English never asks: was this done for oneself or for someone else. It answers with a helper verb after the "-yp/-ip" form. For example: “Балаларға балмұздақ алып бердім” — I bought ice cream for the children. A rule from the Kazakh course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
In the shop and in talk about things Kazakh keeps answering a question English never asks: was this done for oneself or for someone else. It answers with a helper verb after the "-yp/-ip" form.
-yp beru — did it for someone else. Alyp berdim — I bought it (for someone), zhasap berdim — made it (for someone), tigip berdim — sewed it (for someone), aityp berdim — told it (to someone). -yp alu — did it for oneself, to one's own benefit. Alyp aldym — I took it for myself, satyp aldym — bought it for myself, zhazyp aldym — wrote it down (for myself), oqyp aldym — read it through and took it in.
The difference is not a shade but the meaning itself, and mixing them up is expensive: kitap alyp berdim — I bought the book for him, kitap alyp aldym — bought it for myself. English leaves this to context or adds "for myself"; Kazakh is obliged to choose the verb.
Two more helpers work nearby. -yp qoiu — did it in advance, put it away: chekti saqtap qoiñyz — keep the receipt (it will be needed), daiyndap qoidym — prepared in advance. -yp tastau — did it sharply and for good: laqtyryp tastadym — threw it out, öşirip tastadym — wiped it clean.
All four are placed identically: the meaning verb goes into "-yp/-ip", and the helper takes the person, the tense and the negation. The negation is hung on the helper: alyp bergan zhoq — did not buy it for him, saqtap qoimadym — did not keep it.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
