How it works

The unit about breakdowns stands on negation, and negation in Kazakh is not a separate word like English "not" but a suffix inside the verb. Its place is fixed: immediately after the stem and before the tense ending.

The basic form is -ma/-me, -ba/-be, -pa/-pe; the variant is chosen by the last sound of the stem, the vowel by harmony. Qos-pa — do not switch it on, zhaz-ba — do not write, aıt-pa — do not say. In the present-future this suffix fuses with the ending and yields -maidy/-meidi: istedi — it works, istemeidi — it does not work; zaryadtalady — it charges, zaryadtalmaidy — it does not charge. This is exactly the form a person sees most often in a repair shop — English has to spend a whole word "not" or a contraction "doesn't" for the same job.

In the past tense the negation lives two ways. The plain "-mady/-medi": istemedi — it did not work. And the construction with zhoq on the "-ğan" participle: istegan zhoq — it did not work, did not do. The second sounds more frequent and softer in conversation.

The third device — negation by a noun, not a verb: the suffix "-syz/-siz" and the word emes. Dybys-syz — soundless, sym-syz — wireless, tüpnusqa emes — not an original, zhumys isteuge zharamsyz — unfit for work. The sign and the document choose exactly this path: zhöndeuge kelemedi — beyond repair.

And the last thing an English speaker stumbles over: there is no double negation in Kazakh. Eşkim kelmedi — nobody came, word for word "nobody not-came" — the negation stands once, on the verb, while eşkim, eşteñe, eşqaşan carry no negation of their own and cannot live without the negative verb. English does the same in "nobody came" — and slips into "nobody didn't come" only in slang.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
