A short in Kazakh text at level B1. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. Yesterday I posted a photo taken in the mountains, and then put the phone in my pocket. In the evening I looked: more…

Text

Yesterday I posted a photo taken in the mountains, and then put the phone in my pocket. In the evening I looked: more than a hundred likes and thirty comments had gathered. One person wrote that the photo was taken somewhere else, and a long argument began. I checked the information: the date and place of the shot, it turns out, are saved in the phone. I did not want to argue, so I added the source in a comment and ended the exchange.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the narrator post on social media?
  2. What started the argument?
  3. How did the narrator verify the information?
  4. How did it all end?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Kazakh?

B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
