I am not sure

A short in Kazakh text at level B1. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. A friend told me he had received an offer of a new job, but added that he was not sure. On the one hand, the salary is…

A friend told me he had received an offer of a new job, but added that he was not sure. On the one hand, the salary is high; on the other, the office is on the outskirts of the city. The way I see it, he will accept the offer, because such an opportunity does not come often. He himself is afraid to predict: he says it all depends on the talk with the manager. He must answer tomorrow, so he is unlikely to fall asleep today.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the friend tell the narrator?
  2. What bothers the friend?
  3. What does the narrator think?
  4. Why is the friend unlikely to fall asleep?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Kazakh?

B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
