How it works

The unit brings twenty names of professions, and memorizing them one by one is unnecessary. Almost all are assembled from a familiar root by one of four frames, and once you know the frames you start understanding professions the course never taught.

Frame one: მე- (me)…-ე — a person attached to a thing. Take an object and wrap it on both sides: ბაღი (garden) → მებაღე (gardener), ხანძარი (fire) → მეხანძრე (firefighter), თევზი (fish) → მეთევზე (fisherman), ეზო (yard) → მეეზოვე (yard keeper). This is the most Georgian of the four frames and the most alive: new words are still made by it today.

Frame two: მ-…-ელი (or -ალი, -არი) — a person attached to an action. Here the root is a verb: წერს (writes) → მწერალი (writer), ხატავს (paints) → მხატვარი (painter), კერავს (sews) → მკერავი (tailor), აშენებს (builds) → მშენებელი (builder), თარგმნის (translates) → მთარგმნელი (translator). The vowel in the ending wanders — -ელი, -ალი, -არი — and cannot be predicted; recognizing it costs nothing.

Frame three: -ოსი — borrowed professions. It came with Greek words and holds a whole group: მექანიკოსი (mechanic), ელექტრიკოსი (electrician), სანტექნიკოსი (plumber), მუსიკოსი (musician). If a word resembles a European one and ends in -ოსი, it is a profession.

Frame four: no frame at all. დურგალი (carpenter), ექიმი (doctor), ბუღალტერი (accountant), დიზაინერი (designer) — old borrowings and words whose root is long lost. They are learned whole, and they are the minority.

Why this matters beyond saving memory. The frame works in both directions: from მებაღე you dig out ბაღი, from მცხობელი (mtskhobeli) — აცხობს (bakes), from მომწოდებელი (momtsodebeli) — მიწოდება (delivery). An unfamiliar word on a sign stops being opaque, and that is worth more than a memorized list.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

how an activity becomes a person: how does it work in Georgian?

The unit brings twenty names of professions, and memorizing them one by one is unnecessary. Almost all are assembled from a familiar root by one of four frames, and once you know the frames you start understanding professions the course never taught.

What does it look like in an example sentence Georgian?

“მებაღე ბაღში მუშაობს, მეხანძრე კი ხანძარზე დადის” (mebaghe baghshi mushaobs, mekhandzre ki khandzarze dadis) — The gardener works in the garden, and the firefighter goes out to fires. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
