How it works

This unit is the first in the course with almost no objects in it. Society, population, poverty, inequality, unemployment: all these are abstract nouns, and Georgian makes them from familiar words in three ways. The ways are worth knowing, because from here on such words come in a stream.

First: -ობა — from a name to a concept. It attaches to the name of a person or a thing and names a state or a collectivity: ბავშვი (child) → ბავშვობა (childhood), მეგობარი (friend) → მეგობრობა (friendship), მოსახლე (resident) → მოსახლეობა (population), მემკვიდრე (heir) → მემკვიდრეობა (inheritance), ხელი (hand) → ხელობა (craft).

Second: სი-…-ე — from a quality to a property. Adjectives are wrapped in a frame on both sides: ღარიბი (poor) → სიღარიბე (poverty), მდიდარი (rich) → სიმდიდრე (wealth), ლამაზი (beautiful) → სილამაზე (beauty), სუფთა (clean) → სისუფთავე (cleanliness). English does the same with '-ness' ('kindness', 'darkness'), and the mapping is almost one to one.

Third: უ- — negation inside the word. The prefix უ- means 'without' and usually goes together with -ობა: მუშაობა (work) → უმუშევრობა (unemployment), თანასწორობა (equality) → უთანასწორობა (inequality), საფრთხე (danger) → უსაფრთხოება (safety). Note the last one: უ- cancels the danger and you get safety — a negation of a negative word giving a positive.

Fourth, for completeness: სა-…-ო and სა-…-ელი — place and tool. Not abstract, but from the same drawer: წყობასაწყობი (warehouse), საფლავისასაფლაო (cemetery), ვარჯიში (varjishi) → სავარჯიშო (gym), სვამს (drinks) → სასმელი (a drink), სტვენა (whistling) → სასტვენი (a whistle).

The practical consequence. Meeting a long unfamiliar word, cut off its ends and its prefix — inside there is almost certainly a familiar root. უთანასწორობა looks impregnable right up to the moment სწორი (stsori) — even, level — shows through in the middle.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

nouns you cannot touch: how does it work in Georgian?

This unit is the first in the course with almost no objects in it. Society, population, poverty, inequality, unemployment: all these are abstract nouns, and Georgian makes them from familiar words in three ways. The ways are worth knowing, because from here on such words come in a stream.

What does it look like in an example sentence Georgian?

“სიღარიბე და უმუშევრობა ერთმანეთს მოსდევს” (sigharibe da umushevroba ertmanets mosdevs) — Poverty and unemployment follow one another. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
