The new job

A short in Georgian text at level B1. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. I started looking for work two months ago and sent applications for five vacancies. At the first two places I was…

I started looking for work two months ago and sent applications for five vacancies. At the first two places I was rejected, and the third invited me to an interview. The employer, who read my resume, asked me about my work experience. We formalized the employment contract for a year: the probation period is two months, the vacation is paid. On the first day they showed me the department and introduced me to the staff. If everything goes well, in a year we'll talk about a promotion.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. How many vacancies were applications sent to?
  2. What happened at the first two places?
  3. What is the probation period in the contract?
  4. What will they talk about in a year?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Georgian?

B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
