How it works

The skills unit rests on one construction English doesn't have. English splits: 'I know how to read' and 'reading comes easily' — two different words, a verb and a noun. Armenian manages with one infinitive, կարդալ (kardal), and changes only what is attached to it.

Skill — with 'գիտեմ (gitem)'. Կարդալ գիտեմ (kardal gitem) — I know how to read, word for word 'to-read I-know'. Մեքենա վարել գիտեմ (mek'ena varel gitem) — I know how to drive, կիթառ նվագել գիտեմ (kit'arr nvagel gitem) — I know how to play the guitar, լողալ գիտեմ (loghal gitem) — I know how to swim. By instinct you reach for կարող եմ (karogh em), but կարող եմ կարդալ (karogh em kardal) means 'I can read' — right now, if you ask me — not 'I am literate'. The Armenian split matches English 'can' versus 'know how' exactly.

Managing — with 'կարողանալ (karoghanal)'. Չեմ կարողանում հասկանալ (chem karoghanum haskanal) — I can't manage to understand, կարողացա ավարտել (karoghatsa avartel) — I managed to finish. This is about an attempt that succeeded or failed, not about a skill.

Success — impersonally, with 'ստացվել (stats'vel)'. Ստացվեց (statsvets) — it worked out, չի ստացվում — it is not working out, ինձ մոտ չի ստացվում — it is not working out for me. Who acted is not stated at all, and that is fine: Armenian loves impersonal turns about luck and failure. Nearby is ինձ դժվար է տրվում (indz dzhvar e trvum) — it comes hard to me, with the person in the to-form.

The form as a subject — with -ը. Attach the definite ending to the infinitive and it becomes a full noun: կարդալը հեշտ է — reading is easy, սովորելը ժամանակ է պահանջում — studying takes time, խոսելը վարժանք է պահանջում — speaking takes practice. English uses a gerund here; Armenian just articles the infinitive.

And purpose — with -ու (-u) / -ելու: սովորելու համար (sovorelu hamar) — in order to study, կարդալու ժամանակ — time for reading, գրանցվելու հղում — a link for signing up. Five jobs, one form — learn it once and half the sentences about studying assemble themselves.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?

“Կիթառ նվագել գիտեմ, բայց նոտաներ կարդալ չգիտեմ” (kit'arr nvagel gitem, bayts notaner kardal chgitem) — I know how to play the guitar, but I can't read music. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
