Ժամը հինգին, մեկ տարի հետո: how Armenian shows time
Setting up a meeting is four questions: when, from when, until when, and how far ahead. English answers with prepositions — 'at five', 'since morning', 'until evening', 'in a year'. Armenian hangs its own ending or postposition on each question and almost never uses a preposition. For example: “Հանդիպենք ժամը հինգին, ոչ շուտ, քան հինգը” — Let's meet at five, not earlier than five. A rule from the Armenian course…
How it works
Setting up a meeting is four questions: when, from when, until when, and how far ahead. English answers with prepositions — 'at five', 'since morning', 'until evening', 'in a year'. Armenian hangs its own ending or postposition on each question and almost never uses a preposition.
A point in time — the ending -ին (-in). Ժամը հինգին (zhamə hingin) — at five o'clock, երկուշաբթի օրը (yerkushabt'i orə) — on Monday, ապրիլին (aprilin) — in April, առավոտյան (arravotyan) — in the morning, ժամանակին (zhamanakin) — on time. It is the same -ին as the one for the recipient ('ասա ընկերոջդ'); on a time it means 'at'. English's 'at', 'on' and 'in' all collapse into this one ending.
A span — the ending -ում (-um). Երկու ամսում (yerku amsum) — within two months, այս տարում (ays tarum) — this year, մեկ շաբաթում (mek shabat'um) — within a week. The difference from -ին is subtle but constant: -ին places a point, -ում outlines the span inside which everything fit.
Start and end — -ից and մինչև (minchev). Ժամը իննից — from nine, երեկոյից — since evening, մինչև հինգը (minchev hingə) — until five, մինչև վաղը (minchev vaghə) — until tomorrow. The pair -ից ... մինչև covers any schedule: իննից մինչև վեցը — from nine to six.
Shifts — the postpositions առաջ (arraj) and հետո (heto), standing after the span, not before it: մեկ տարի հետո (mek tari heto) — in a year, երկու օր առաջ (yerku or arraj) — two days ago, ճաշից հետո — after lunch, քնելուց առաջ — before sleep. English's 'in / after' becomes հետո, and 'ago' becomes առաջ — easy to mix up, because առաջ literally means 'forward' yet points backward in time.
And the adverbs of time assessment collected separately in this unit: մշտապես (mshtapes) — permanently, ժամանակավորապես (zhamanakavorapes) — temporarily, վաղուց (vaghuts) — long since, դեռ (derr) — still, արդեն (arden) — already, հենց հիմա (hents hima) — right now. All of them stand before the verb and never change form. One trap: դեռ with a negation gives English 'not yet' — դեռ չեմ որոշել (derr chem voroshel) — I haven't decided yet, not 'I will never decide'.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?
“Հանդիպենք ժամը հինգին, ոչ շուտ, քան հինգը” (handipenk' zhamə hingin, voch shut, k'an hingə) — Let's meet at five, not earlier than five. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
