Կրկնակի, տասնյակ, մեկուկես: fractions and multiples

The fifty-second unit rests on three suffixes and one fusing trick. Counting in Armenian you already can — here we talk about how to make 'twofold', 'a ten' and 'one and a half' out of a number. For example: “Գինը կրկնակի բարձրացավ” — The price doubled. A rule from the Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

The fifty-second unit rests on three suffixes and one fusing trick. Counting in Armenian you already can — here we talk about how to make 'twofold', 'a ten' and 'one and a half' out of a number.

-ակի — multiples. Կրկին (again) → կրկնակի (double), եռ- (three) → եռակի (triple), քառ- (four) → քառակի (quadruple). The row continues as far as you like: հնգակի, տասնակի.

-պատիկ — the same, but for verbs and big numbers. Կրկնապատկել — to double, կրկնապատկվել (krknapatkvel) — to double itself, տասնապատիկ (tasnapatik) — tenfold. English 'an order of magnitude' is translated exactly this way: տասնապատիկ ավելի (tasnapatik aveli).

-յակ — a group of so many. Տաս (tas) → տասնյակ (a ten, a handful), հինգ (hing) → հնգյակ (a five), տարի (tari) → տարեկան (tarekan), but տասնամյակ (tasnamyak) — a decade. The same suffix makes both a group of objects and a stretch of time.

Fusing with 'կես (kes)'. Մեկուկես (one and a half) is assembled from մեկ (mek) + ու (and) + կես (half). Further along the same pattern: երկուսուկես (two and a half), երեքուկես. There is no separate word to memorize — Armenian always builds it by addition, and that is exactly why the course spine tags it as the single new numeral of the wave.

Fractions. Կես — half, քառորդ (k'arrord) — quarter, but a third has no word of its own: երրորդ մաս (yerrord mas), literally 'a third part'. 'By a third' — the instrumental: մեկ երրորդով (mek yerrordov).

By example

  • Գինը կրկնակի բարձրացավ
    ginə krknaki bardzratsav
    The price doubled
  • Ճանապարհը տևեց մեկուկես ժամ
    chanaparhə tevets mekukes zham
The road took an hour and a half
  • Ծախսերը կրճատվեցին մեկ երրորդով
    tsakhserə krchatvetsin mek yerrordov
The costs were cut by a third

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

What does it look like in an example sentence Armenian?
