Text

  • Atzo garbigailua hondatu egin zen: zarata handia egin zuen eta erdian gelditu zen, arropa barruan. Konpontzaileari deitu diot telefonoz. Yesterday the washing machine went wrong: it made a big noise and stopped in the middle, with the laundry inside. I called the repairman on the phone. He said he would look at the opening and bring a spare part. "Do not worry, it can be fixed," he said. He will come tomorrow morning, and meanwhile I wash by hand.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What happened to the washing machine?
  2. Who did the narrator call?
  3. What did the repairman say?
  4. When will the repairman come?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Basque?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
