Text

  • Atzo mendian ibili ginen egun osoan. Goizean zerua hodeitsua zegoen eta lainoa haranean zegoen oraindik; ardiak bidezidorren ondoan zeuden, belar berdea jaten. Arratsaldean eguzkitsu egin zen eta ostadar bat ikusi genuen itsasoaren gainean. Ur garbia edan genuen errekatik eta itzuli egin ginen, nekatuta baina pozik.
Yesterday we walked in the mountains all day. In the morning the sky was overcast, and fog still stood in the valley; the sheep were next to the footpath, eating green grass. In the afternoon it turned sunny, and we saw a rainbow over the sea. We drank our fill of clean water from the stream and returned — tired but content.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. Where did they go yesterday?
  2. What was the sky like in the morning?
  3. What did the sheep eat?
  4. What did they see over the sea?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Basque?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
