How it works
The plain σε (se) answers only "whereabouts". An exact position is assembled from two words: an adverb plus από (apó) or σε, and this is one of the most regular things in the language.
With από go: μπροστά από (in front of), πίσω από (behind), πάνω από (above), κάτω από (under), απέναντι από (across from), γύρω από (around), μακριά από (far from).
With σε — noticeably fewer: δίπλα σε (next to), κοντά σε (close to), μέσα σε (inside), ανάμεσα σε (between). And σε here, as always, fuses with the article: δίπλα στο φανάρι (dípla sto fanári), κοντά στη γέφυρα (kondá sti yéfira).
The easiest way to remember which goes with which is through the sense: από where there is a reference point and a distance measured from it, σε where the thing is pressed against something.
Both prepositions demand the accusative, like every Greek preposition: μπροστά από τον σταθμό (brostá apó ton stathmó), δίπλα στη στάση (dípla sti stási).
Apart stand those that do without the second word: κατά μήκος του δρόμου (along the street) and στη γωνία (on the corner) — there the genitive and the plain σε do the work.
