A word out of two words: ގަނޑު, ކޮޅު, ކޮށި and the genitive

Units fifty-six and fifty-seven are packed with words Divehi does not have in one piece: "glacier", "deposit", "work clothes", "lathe". This is not poverty of the language — it is its way. Divehi does not borrow the term; it folds it out of two of its own nouns, and folds it by rules worth seeing once. For example: “ގަނޑުފެން ފަރުބަދަތައް ކުޑަވުމުން ކަނޑުގެ ލޮނުގަނޑު އުފުލެނީ” — As the glaciers shrink, the sea level…

How it works

Units fifty-six and fifty-seven are packed with words Divehi does not have in one piece: "glacier", "deposit", "work clothes", "lathe". This is not poverty of the language — it is its way. Divehi does not borrow the term; it folds it out of two of its own nouns, and folds it by rules worth seeing once.

The first noun defines, the second names. ގަނޑުފެން ފަރުބަދަ (gandufen farubadha) — "ice-mountain", a glacier; ކުނިކޮށި (kunikoshi) — "trash-yard", a dump; މަސައްކަތު ހެދުން (masakkathu hedhun) — "work clothes", workwear; ބިންގާ (bingaa) — "earth-stone", a foundation. The order is the reverse of English: the head word goes last.

The genitive in -ގެ (-ge) ties two nouns. ދޯނީގެ ބާވުން (dhoaneege baavun) — the wear of the boat, އިންޖީނުގެ ދުން (injeenuge dhun) — the exhaust of the engine, މުދަލުގެ ލިޔުން (mudhaluge liyun) — the waybill. If the first noun is short, -ގެ is often dropped: މަސައްކަތު މީހާ (masakkathu meehaa) instead of މަސައްކަތުގެ މީހާ (masakkathuge meehaa).

The tail -ގަނޑު (-gandu) makes "a mass, a sheet, a gathering". ފެން (fen) → ފެންގަނޑު (a puddle), ބައި (bai) → ބައިގަނޑު (a flock), ލޮނު (lonu) → ލޮނުގަނޑު (the sea surface), މަށި → މަށިގަނޑު (soil). The tail neither diminishes nor enlarges — it turns a substance into a single piece.

The tail -ކޮޅު (-kolhu) makes "a little piece". ބިން (bin) → ބިންކޮޅު (a plot of land), ހިނދު → ހިނދުކޮޅު (an instant), މިނެޓު (minetu) → މިނެޓުކޮޅު (a little minute), ފައިސާ (faisaa) → ފައިސާކޮޅު (some money). It also softens: to say ފައިސާކޮޅު is politer than ފައިސާ.

The tail -ކޮށި (-koshi) makes "an enclosed place". ކުނިކޮށި — a dump, ދަނޑުކޮށި — a garden patch. And the place of work is assembled through ތަން (than) or ގެ (ge): ވަޑާންގެ — a workshop, އިންޖީނުގެ (injeenuge) — a generator shed. Whoever knows these four tails will assemble "deposit" alone, without looking into a dictionary.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Maldivian?

“ގަނޑުފެން ފަރުބަދަތައް ކުޑަވުމުން ކަނޑުގެ ލޮނުގަނޑު އުފުލެނީ” (gandufen farubadhathah kudavumun kanduge lonugandu ufulenee) — As the glaciers shrink, the sea level of the ocean rises. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
