Correr els diumenges

A short in Catalan text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. Every Sunday morning I run in the park with my brother. Before starting we always warm up: five minutes stretching arms…

Text

  • Cada diumenge al matí corro al parc amb el meu germà. Abans de començar sempre fem escalfament: estirem els braços i les cames cinc minuts. Al principi em cansava molt i els músculs em feien mal, però amb els mesos he guanyat resistència. Ara corro cinc quilòmetres sense aturar-me. L'any que ve volem participar en la cursa popular del poble: la sortida és a la plaça i l'arribada, al parc.
Every Sunday morning I run in the park with my brother. Before starting we always warm up: five minutes stretching arms and legs. At first I got very tired and my muscles hurt, but over the months I gained endurance. Now I run five kilometers without stopping. Next year we want to take part in the town's fun run: the start is on the square, and the finish is in the park.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. When does the narrator run?
  2. What do they do before running?
  3. How many kilometers does he run now?
  4. Where will the start of the race be?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Catalan?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
