Prevenció i salut
A short in Catalan text at level B1. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. Every winter the same thing: the viruses come, and someone in Marta's family invariably ends up at the doctor's. This…
Text
Every winter the same thing: the viruses come, and someone in Marta's family invariably ends up at the doctor's. This year, however, they decided to put an end to it: the flu vaccines are already done, and by the door stands a new medicine cabinet. They wash their hands coming in from the street, air the rooms and avoid overcrowded places. The family doctor told them this a thousand times: the best medicine is prevention, and immunity is treated in bed and in the kitchen, not at the pharmacy. Now, in mid-January, all four are healthy: on average the colds in their home have been halved.
Comprehension questions
The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.
- What did the family do in advance this year?
- What does the family do coming in from the street?
- What, in the doctor's words, matters most?
- How did the number of colds change in January?
Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Catalan?
B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
