How it works
A neutral cause is introduced through a causa de + noun — "because of": Va ingressar a l'hospital a causa d'una infecció — he was admitted to hospital because of an infection. Before a vowel it contracts: a causa d'un virus.
The assessment of the cause chooses between two sisters: gràcies a — "thanks to" (the outcome is good): Gràcies a la vacuna, no es va contagiar; per culpa de — "because of, through the fault of" (the outcome is bad): Per culpa del tabac, els pulmons no perdonen. The event is one — the assessment is different: choose the sister by the mood of the phrase.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
