Weather impersonally: fa, plou, hi ha

Catalan "makes" the weather: fa fred, fa calor, fa sol, fa vent, fa bo. The impersonal form changes for nobody. For example: “Avui plou a Barcelona” — Today in Barcelona it rains. A rule from the Valencian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Catalan "makes" the weather: fa fred, fa calor, fa sol, fa vent, fa bo. The impersonal form changes for nobody.

Rain and snow have verbs of their own: plou — it rains, neva — it snows, trona — it thunders.

Fog goes through "hi ha": hi ha boira — there is fog. One formula serves the whole forecast.

By example

  • Avui plou a Barcelona
    Today in Barcelona it rains
  • A l'hivern fa fred al matí
In winter it is cold in the mornings
  • Al matí hi ha boira al mar
In the morning there is fog over the sea

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
