Where exactly: the ending -இல
The familiar -க்கு answers 'to where': கடைக்கு போறேன் — 'I am going to the shop'. To say 'where', another ending is needed — -இல, shortened in speech to -ல: கடையில இருக்கேன் — 'I am at the shop'. For example: “நான் வீட்டில இருக்கேன்” — I am at home. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
The familiar -க்கு answers 'to where': கடைக்கு போறேன் (kaḍaikku pōṟēṉ) — 'I am going to the shop'. To say 'where', another ending is needed — -இல, shortened in speech to -ல: கடையில இருக்கேன் (kaḍaiyila irukkēṉ) — 'I am at the shop'.
The difference between them is the difference between 'to the hospital' and 'at the hospital', and they are confused constantly. The test is simple: if the verb is about movement (போ (pō), வா (vā)), you need -க்கு; if about being somewhere (இரு (iru), வேலை செய்), you need -ல.
One more word attaches to -ல — இருந்து (irundu), 'starting from', and together they make 'from': வீட்டில இருந்து (vīṭṭila irundu) — 'from the house', ஆஸ்பத்திரியில இருந்து (āspattiriyila irundu) — 'from the hospital'. Time works the same way: நேற்று இருந்து (nēṟṟu irundu) — 'since yesterday'.
The stem before the ending sometimes changes: வீடு (vīḍu) → வீட்டில (vīṭṭila), படிவம் (paḍivam) → படிவத்தில (paḍivattila). These are not exceptions but rules for words in -டு and -ம், and it is enough to recognize them on sight.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
Frequently asked
Where exactly: how does it work in Tamil?
The familiar -க்கு answers 'to where': கடைக்கு போறேன் — 'I am going to the shop'. To say 'where', another ending is needed — -இல, shortened in speech to -ல: கடையில இருக்கேன் — 'I am at the shop'.
What does it look like in an example sentence Tamil?
“நான் வீட்டில இருக்கேன்” (nāṉ vīṭṭila irukkēṉ) — I am at home. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
