How the whole thing sounds

The situation: a neighbor invites them to his slava, and the guest finds out what one is supposed to bring. The conversation is short and predictable — which is exactly what makes it good for a first try: few lines, and almost all of them repeat from one exchange to the next.

Komšija, u subotu nam je slava. Dođite ti i žena.
Neighbor, we have our slava on Saturday. Come, you and your wife.
Thanks for the invitation. What is customary to bring, so I don't get it wrong?
Nothing special, that's the custom: flowers or wine, and that's plenty.
Onda donosimo buket. Treba li da se izujemo na vratima?
Then we'll bring a bouquet. Should we take our shoes off at the door?
Not necessarily, but the children always take their shoes off; the carpet is new.
A koliko vas bude? Pitam zbog poklona, ne bih da preteram.
And how many of you will there be? I'm asking because of the gift; I don't want to overdo it.
Oko dvadeset, uglavnom rodbina. Novac na poklon nikako, uvredio bih se.
About twenty, mostly relatives. Money as a gift — never; I'd be offended.
Važi. Onda se vidimo u sedam, i čestitam ti slavu unapred.
Agreed. Then we'll see you at seven, and congratulations on your slava in advance.

How to prepare for a conversation like this

Memorizing the lines is not enough: the other person will say their own thing, not what is written. What helps more is catching the key words by ear and keeping three rescue phrases ready: “I don't understand”, “repeat, please”, “slower”.

And one more thing phrasebooks do not mention: awkwardness gets in the way more than not knowing the words.

Frequently asked

How do you start a conversation in Serbian in this situation?

“Комшија, у суботу нам је слава. Дођите ти и жена.” (Komšija, u subotu nam je slava. Dođite ti i žena.) — Neighbor, we have our slava on Saturday. Come, you and your wife.. The first line in such a conversation is almost always the same, and that is the one worth learning: the other person will carry it from there.

What if you did not understand the reply?

Say “I don't understand” and “repeat, please” — both are in the rescue set. Admitting your language is still shaky almost always makes the other person more patient.

Should you memorize the dialogue?

No. It is more useful to catch the key words by ear: the other person will say their own thing, and a memorized line will not always fit their reply.
