In this unit almost every concept is not a word but a group: "surveillance camera", "artificial intelligence", "sewing machine", "database", "painkiller". English stacks such groups from bare nouns; Serbian assembles them by its own rules, and English helps here only half the time.
Rule one: an adjective definition stands before the noun and agrees with it. Veštačka inteligencija — artificial intelligence, veštačke inteligencije, veštačkom inteligencijom. Both words bend together, not one.
Rule two: a noun definition stands after, in the of-form. Baza podataka — a base of data, a database; upala pluća — an inflammation of the lungs, pneumonia; cena prevoza — the price of the ride; dan žalosti — a day of mourning. English does exactly the same with "of" — the one spot where no new thinking is required.
Rule three: purpose is expressed by za with the object form. Kamera za nadzor — a camera for surveillance, lek za glavobolju — medicine for a headache, sredstvo za pranje, pumpa za vodu — a water pump. An adjective can do it too — nadzorna kamera — but za always works and never sounds clumsy: it is the Serbian machine for building "painkiller" words.
The order of several definitions is rigid: pointer, then possessive, then quantity, then quality, and only then the noun: ovaj moj novi uređaj. Shuffling them is heard as an error even though every word is in its place.
What Serbian does not do: it does not stack two bare nouns the way English piles them up. Internet prodavnica passes only because the first word has settled as an indeclinable; "kamera nadzor" is impossible. In doubt — reach for za or the of-form.
And the small thing that outs a foreigner. An abbreviated unit after a number does not bend: pet km, dva l, sto g. The full word always bends: pet kilometara, dva litra, sto grama.
