How it works
Adult speech stands on nouns the language did not start with: they are built from verbs and adjectives. English does the same with -ing, -tion and -ness; Serbian does it with two suffixes, both predictable enough that you can assemble a new word yourself.
From a verb — the suffix -nje. Take the passive participle and swap the ending: ažurirati → ažuriranje — updating; podešavati → podešavanja — settings; razočarati → razočaranje, olakšati → olakšanje, saosećati → saosećanje, ponašati se → ponašanje — behavior. All of them are neuter and decline like polje. The meaning is the action itself or its result — the same zone as the English -ing and -tion words.
From an adjective — the suffix -ost. The fleeting a drops out, the suffix takes its place: usamljen → usamljenost — loneliness; pouzdan → pouzdanost — reliability; drzak → drskost — audacity; moguć → mogućnost — possibility; ozbiljan → ozbiljnost. All -ost words are feminine and decline like stvar: bez mogućnosti, o usamljenosti. There are exceptions — vrednoća instead of the expected vrednost in the sense of diligence — but few.
Why learn this when you could just learn the words? Because gender and case come out of the suffix instead of the dictionary: meeting an unfamiliar uverenje, you already know it is neuter and pluralizes to uverenja; seeing pouzdanost you know it is feminine with the of-form pouzdanosti.
And one trap that makes learners invent nonexistent words. Serbian -nje gives a process, not a thing: grejanje — heating as a process, while the radiator is a radijator; pakovanje — the packing, though it can also be the package itself; but obaveštenje has already become a thing — the message itself. Where the language has claimed the slot with a ready word, the verb noun is not admitted: a repair is popravka, not "popravljanje", though that word is formally possible.
