How it works

Softer is a question: Možete li mi pomoći? — can you help me, Da li biste mogli da ponovite? — literally "would you be able to repeat". The form biste is the Serbian "would", and it makes the request pointedly polite: this is the register of the bank and the clinic, exactly where English says "would you…".
And the main snag: the short unstressed words — li, bih, sam, mi, me, se, je — not only take second place in the sentence; they line up among themselves in a strict queue: li first, then the "would" forms (bih, biste), then the helpers (sam…), then the to-words (mi — to whom), then the whom-words (me), then se, and je always last.
Hence Možete li mi pomoći? — never "možete mi li". And Drago mi je — je last, always. No need to memorize the whole ladder: the pairs "li mi", "mi je", "mi se" cover almost all everyday speech, the way you say "give it to me" without parsing grammar.
