Serbian has short unstressed particles — sam, si, je, mi, se, će — and their place in the sentence is fixed: second. Not at the end, not wherever convenient: right after the first stressed word. English does something similar with contractions — I'm, you've, he's cling to the word in front and cannot open a sentence ("'M late" is not English) — but Serbian makes it a strict law, and it is the only rigid word-order rule in a language where everything else can be shuffled almost freely. Break it and everyone hears it at once, the way "me name is John" rings in English.
