Z vlakom v Maribor

A short in Slovenian text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. On Friday I will take the train to Maribor. I bought the ticket back on Wednesday, because a return ticket is cheaper…

Text

  • V petek bom šel z vlakom v Maribor.
On Friday I will take the train to Maribor. I bought the ticket back on Wednesday, because a return ticket is cheaper than two one-way ones. The train leaves from platform three at seven in the morning, so I will have to get up very early. I will not have much luggage: only a backpack and a small bag. A suitcase would be too heavy, since I am staying only one night.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. When did he buy the ticket?
  2. Why did he take a return ticket?
  3. What is he taking with him?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
