How it works

This wave holds forty-odd "verbs" of the syllabus, and a good half of them in Kazakh are not verbs but a noun plus a service verb: temeki shegu, talap etu, bas tartu, alğys aitui, qonaq etu, aulaq bolu. The dictionary does not help here: looking up "to treat (someone to food)" is useless, because the sought word does not exist — there is qonaq (a guest) and etu (to do). What helps is knowing which service verb goes with which noun.

etu — the most general: "to do with something". Talap etu (to demand), qonaq etu (to treat), habar etu (to notify), nazar etu (to pay attention). It takes mostly Arabic and Persian nouns. Next to it stands qylu — the same thing, but older and rougher: zhaqsylyq qylu. English does the same work with light verbs: "take a look", "have a talk".

aitu — "to say": everything pronounced aloud. Alğys aitui (to thank), köñil aitui (to condole), syn aitui (to criticize), bata aitui (to give a blessing). In English these are single verbs — thank, condole, criticize; in Kazakh they are always two words.

bolu — "to be": a state, not an action. Aulaq bolu (to avoid), tänti bolu (to admire), qarsy bolu (to be against), narazy bolu (to be displeased). Notice: in all of them a quality stands before bolu, not a noun, and therefore the person and the tense hang on bolu, while the quality does not change at all.

And four nouns with a verb of their own, which must be memorized whole: dastarqan zhauu (to spread the table), bas tartu (to refuse, literally "to pull back the head"), temeki shegu (to smoke, literally "to draw on tobacco"), qol alysu (to exchange handshakes). Here the verb was chosen not by the logic of "doing" but by the picture, and you cannot pick it by analogy.

How it all glues together in a sentence. The tails of tense and person settle only on the second, service verb: alğys aittym, qonaq ettik, qarsy boldy. The negation also goes on it: bas tartpady. But the case is demanded by the first word: usynystan bas tartu, önerine tänti bolu — and each pair has its own case, the way English is learned as "insist ON" and "object TO".
