How it works
This unit holds thirty-odd professions, and almost none of them is a root. English names a person by the trade with a dozen different devices — "baker", "tailor", "gardener", "scientist" — and each is memorized separately. Kazakh does the same job with four tails, and the tail is not chosen at random.
-shy / -şi — the most frequent and the most honest. It hangs on a noun or on a name of action and means "the one engaged in it": satu gives satushy (seller), zhazu — zhazushy (writer), küzet — küzetşi (guard), tigu — tiginşi (tailor), qurylys — qurylyshshy (builder). The choice between "y" and "i" is decided by vowel harmony: after a back syllable -shy, after a front one -şi. The tail is alive: it is attached to any new borrowing at once — sportshy, boks-shy, futbolshy.
-ker / -ger came from Persian and sounds weightier. It hangs on an Arabic or Persian noun and gives a person at an occupation, not at a tool: käsip — käsipker (entrepreneur), qyzmet — qyzmetker (employee), qaryz — qaryzger (debtor), keiip — keiipker (character). After a voiced sound the tail is voiced too: not qaryzker but qaryzger.
-paz gives not a profession but a propensity. As — food, aspaz — a cook; öner — art, önerpaz — an amateur artist; zheñu — to win, zheñimpaz — a winner. The difference from -shy is subtle but noticeable: -shy is about work, -paz about passion.
-hana names not a person but a premises. Also Persian, it means "house": därixana — a pharmacy, emhana — a clinic, zerthana — a laboratory, kitaphana — a library, sheberhana — a workshop. If a word of this wave ends in -hana, the talk is about a place, and the person in it is named separately.
Where the tail did not suffice. Half of the professions of this wave Kazakh assembled not with a tail but with two words: mal därigeri, ağash ustasy, ört söndirushi, bağynyshty qyzmetker. This is the izafet, and it means "a doctor of cattle", "a master of wood". Learn them whole: taking them apart is possible, assembling a new one by analogy — no.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
