Eñ, tym, eñ zhaqsysy: the superlative and its kin
The comparative the course installed back in wave 1 — the ablative plus an adjective. The superlative could not be simpler: put "eñ" before the word, and that is all. Eñ ülken — the biggest, eñ zhaqyn bank bölimşesi — the nearest bank branch. The word eñ never changes and agrees with nothing — English "the most" behaves the same. For example: “Бұл — қаладағы ең арзан пәтер” — This is the cheapest flat in the city. A…
How it works
The comparative the course installed back in wave 1 — the ablative plus an adjective. The superlative could not be simpler: put "eñ" before the word, and that is all. Eñ ülken — the biggest, eñ zhaqyn bank bölimşesi — the nearest bank branch. The word eñ never changes and agrees with nothing — English "the most" behaves the same.
The trap is elsewhere. English "the very" and Kazakh "eñ" diverge in two places. First: "that very one" is not eñ but sol or osy: sol kitap — that very book. Saying eñ kitap is impossible. Second: where English amplifies a noun ("in the very center"), Kazakh takes a different word — däl ortalyqta, naq ortasynda. Eñ works only with a quality, that is, with an adjective or an adverb.
What you choose from stands in the ablative, not the genitive: bärinen zhaqsy — better than anyone, word for word "of all, good". Hence a very frequent form: eñ zhaqsysy — "best of all is that...", with a possessive tail on the adjective. Eñ zhaqsysy, erteñ baraiıq — best of all, let us go tomorrow. Eñ bastysy (the main thing) and eñ qyzyğy (the most interesting thing) are assembled the same way — the phrases half of conversations open with.
Next to it lives intensification without comparison, and it gets confused with the superlative. Asa — extremely, highly: asa mañyzdy — extremely important. Öte — simply "very". Tym — too, always with a reproach. And there is a Kazakh device English lacks: doubling the first syllable with a consonant — qyp-qyzyl (scarlet red), jap-zhaqsy (splendid), tap-taza (spotless). It works only with short adjectives of color and quality, and it sounds homely and warm.
Table
| The device | How it is built | Example | In English |
|---|---|---|---|
| the superlative | eñ + adjective | eñ ülken | the biggest |
| what we choose from | the ablative | bärinen zhaqsy | better than anyone |
| "best of all" | eñ + adj. + -sy | eñ zhaqsysy | best of all is that... |
| "the main thing" | eñ bastysy | eñ bastysy — uaqyt | the main thing is time |
| "that very one" | sol / osy, not "eñ" | sol adam | that very person |
| the extreme degree | asa | asa mañyzdy | extremely important |
| syllable doubling | qyp-, jap-, tap- | qyp-qyzyl | scarlet red |

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
