Must, obliged, able: kerek, tiis and -a alu
Modality is what a person uses from the first day, and until now the course has not said a word about it. Three constructions cover almost everything. For example: “Маған екі кісілік үстел керек” — I need a table for two. A rule from the Kazakh course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Modality is what a person uses from the first day, and until now the course has not said a word about it. Three constructions cover almost everything.
Kerek — "need". You have known the word since the first unit, but only half of its power has been used. With a noun it demands the dative of the one who needs: mağan bilet kerek. With a verb, the verb takes the -u form: mağan baru kerek — I need to go. Stricter and more official is tiis: siz töleuge tiissiz — you are obliged to pay. Kerek is everyday, tiis is from documents and announcements; mixing them up is not dangerous, but the difference is audible — English splits the same ground between "need to" and "have to".
Bolady and bolmaidy — "may" and "may not". The verb with them stands in the dative of the "-u" form: kiruge bolady — one may enter, shylum sheguge bolmaidy — smoking is not allowed. This is the most frequent pair on signs, and also the politest way to ask: kiip körüge bola ma?
-a alu — "to be able, to manage". The -a/-e/-y form plus the verb alu: jüze alamyn — I can swim, aita alasyz ba? — could you say? The negation here is special: not a plain "almaimyn" but the fused -a almaw → bara almaimyn — I cannot go. Learners almost always say mümkin emes instead, and that is a false friend: mümkin emes means "impossible in general", not "I cannot".

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
