Ökpeşil, uialshaq, tapqyrlyq: what character is made of

The unit about character is assembled with four tails, and they are not interchangeable: each carries its own measure and its own judgment. English "-ish", "-ful" and "-ness" do not keep such differences, which is why the hints of this unit always name the tail. For example: “Ол өкпешіл, абайлап сөйле” — He is touchy, speak carefully. A rule from the Kazakh course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

The unit about character is assembled with four tails, and they are not interchangeable: each carries its own measure and its own judgment. English "-ish", "-ful" and "-ness" do not keep such differences, which is why the hints of this unit always name the tail.

-shyl / -şil — a steady propensity, more often with a reproach. Özimşil — selfish, ökpeşil — touchy, turashyl — straightforward, ultshyl — a nationalist. The tail says: the person is always like this, it is his property, and usually it gets in the way.

-shaq / -şek — a light propensity, almost without condemnation. Uialshaq — shy, urysshaq — feisty, qorqaq — cowardly. The difference from -shyl is in the weight: -shaq is about a person who slips into the state easily rather than lives in it.

-ğysh / -giş — a propensity for the action, often with a grin. Täptiştegiş — meticulous (täptişteu — to pore over), bilgiş — a know-it-all, umytshaq goes by another tail, while sengiş — gullible. About things the same tail meant "breaks easily" (synğysh), about people — "does it all the time".

-paz — a propensity as mastery, always with approval. Sheshimpaz — resolute, önerpaz — artistic, aspaz — a cook, zheñimpaz — a winner. The only one of the four tails that praises.

-lyq / -lik turns a quality into an abstract noun. Adaladaldyq, zhalkauzhalqaulyq, tapqyrtapqyrlyq, qyñyrqyñyrlyq, ustamdyustamdylyq. The tail hangs on the ready adjective, which is why the nouns of character are always a syllable or two longer than the adjectives themselves. The test is simple: if the English word has "-ness" or "-ity", Kazakh will have -lyq.

Where the tail did not suffice. Some traits Kazakh names with a phrase: bolzhauga keleitetin — unpredictable, zhanashyr — caring (from "soul" and "to ache"). And almost all the actions go in links: til alu — to obey, betine basu — to reproach, sözinde turu — to keep one's word. You can take them apart, but you cannot assemble a new one by analogy.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
