We live in a quiet district on the edge of the city. Behind the house there is a park: it has many benches, and in the evening street lamps come on. The bus stop is next to the intersection, but at rush hour there are not enough seats on the bus. Last year the bridge was repaired, so for a whole month we had to call taxis. Now we reach the center in twenty minutes, and if you like walking, you can also go along the embankment.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. Where does the narrator live?
  2. What is behind the house?
  3. Why did they have to call taxis for a month?
  4. How long does it take to the center?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Kazakh?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
