Ամենալավը and լավագույնը: two 'bests'

How it works

The first is that same ամենա-, glued on in front with no space: ամենալավ ուսանողը, ամենադժվար քննությունը. If no noun follows it, the article -ը moves onto the adjective itself: Նա ամենալավն է (na amenalavn e) — he is the best. A small thing that matters: without -ը the sentence hangs in the air.
The second is the ending -ագույն, attached at the back: լավագույն (lavaguyn), մեծագույն, բարձրագույն (bardzraguyn). It is more bookish and narrower than ամենա-: not every adjective takes it, but in set phrases only it will do. Բարձրագույն կրթություն (bardzraguyn krt'ut'yun) — higher education, and no 'ամենաբարձր կրթություն' can replace it. Լավագույն ընկերս (lavaguyn ənkers) — my best friend: it sounds warmer than ամենալավ (amenalav).
The third is comparing against the whole group at once, with -ից or ամենից: Դասարանում բոլորից լավն է (dasaranum bolorits lavn e) — he is the best in the class; Այս գիրքը ամենից հետաքրքիրն է — this book is the most interesting of all. English says 'the best'; Armenian says 'better than everyone' — and this is the most common form in live speech.
And one trap. English 'the very' stresses precision, not degree: 'the very center', 'the very man'. Ամենա- will not do that job — other words are needed there: հենց կենտրոնում (hents kentronum) — right in the center, հենց այդ մարդը (hents ayd mardə) — that very man. Հենց (hents) is the Armenian 'exactly, right'.
