Այո and Հա: the two Armenian yeses
The neutral 'yes' is Այո. It fits everywhere: answering a stranger, filling in a form, a business talk, a letter. If you are not sure what is fitting, take it — it is never wrong. Among your own the short Հա (ha) sounds far more often. Its flavour is the English 'yep': friendly, everyday, normal in texts and with someone your own age. It is not rude, but to an elder or a stranger the full Այո is the better answer — the same distance as between Մերսի (mersi) and the full 'thank you'.
The partner of both is Ոչ (voch), 'no', and it has a colloquial twin of its own, just as Հա pairs with Այո: Չէ (che), 'ch' — the everyday 'nah'. Չէ, չեմ ուզում (chem uzum) — nah, I don't want to. The same particle works as 'neither': ոչ ես (voch yes), ոչ դու (voch du) — neither me nor you. And remember, Armenian has no separate word for 'whether' in a question: the job is done entirely by the sign ՞, set over the stressed vowel — Ժամանակ ունե՞ք (zhamanak unek'), 'do you have time?'. Such questions are answered exactly with Այո or Ոչ.
