Text
- Auzokoek eztabaida luzea izan dute parke berriaren inguruan. Batzuen iritziz, jolastokia behar da umeentzat; beste batzuen ustez, ordea, lorategia hobea da loreekin. Argumentuak entzun ondoren, inkesta bat egin dute etxe bakoitzean. Emaitzek erakutsi dute ia denak jolastokia nahi dutela, salbuespen txiki batekin. Azkenean, adostasunera iritsi dira: parkearen erdia jolastokirako izango da, bestea loreentzat. Beraz, dena kontuan hartuta, denek irabazi dute. The neighbors argued for a long time about the new park. In the opinion of some, the children need a playground; in the opinion of others, a garden with flowers is better. Having heard the arguments, they held a survey in every house. The results showed that almost everybody wants the playground, with a small exception. In the end they reached agreement: half the park is for the playground, the rest for the flowers. So, having taken everything into account, everybody won.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Basque?
B1. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
