Text

  • Gaur goizean albiste garrantzitsu bat irakurri dut egunkarian. Kazetari batek eskandalu bat azaldu du: funtzionario batek sobornak hartu zituela esan du. Bi iturrik esan dute berdina, baina zenbaitek ez du sinesten: zurrumurrua dela diote. Ni uste dut informazioa egiaztatu behar dela beti, irakurri aurretik.
This morning I read an important news item in the paper. One journalist explained the scandal: he said that an official took bribes. Two sources say the same thing, but some do not believe it: they say it is a rumor. I think information must always be verified before reading on.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the narrator read in the morning?
  2. What is the scandal about?
  3. What do some readers say?
  4. What does the narrator think?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Basque?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
