-ބަލަ turns a command into a soft request: ދީ ("give") — ދީބަލަ ("do give"), ބުނޭ ("say") — ބުނެބަލަ ("do say"). Between one's own people this is the most frequent form of a request.
The insert -ލަ- makes the action small and therefore undemanding: ވިސްނާނަން ("I will think") — ވިސްނާލާނަން ("I will think it over"), ކުރަން (kuran) — ކޮށްލަން. It also softens one's own intention, so as not to sound decided.
-ތޯ (-tho) instead of -ތަ. Both make a question, but -ތަ is only for one's own: ދޭހަވެއްޖެތަ (dheyhavejjetha) — to a friend, ދޭހަވެއްޖެތޯ (dheyhavejjethoa) — to a boss or a stranger. A question about one's own action with -ތޯ is the Divehi way of asking permission: ސުވާލެއް ކޮށްލަންތޯ ("may I ask you something?").
The honorific verbs are separate words, not forms: ބުނުން ("to say") about the interlocutor becomes ވިދާޅުވުން, ދިނުން ("to give") — ދެއްވުން, ބެލުން ("to look") — ބެއްލެވުން. About oneself they are never used: to say ވިދާޅުވިން about one's own speech is a gross mistake.
A refusal is softened the same way. A direct "no" is avoided: ހީވަނީ ނުވާނެހެން ("I am afraid not"), އެހެން ފަހަރަކުން ދޯ ("maybe some other time"). The particle ދޯ (dhoa) at the end asks for consent and turns a decision into a suggestion.
