In the island school the science lessons have begun. At the first lesson they taught length, width and weight. The children measured the length of a table — exactly two meters. Then they weighed a book — about five hundred grams. After that they went to the beach to measure the depth of the lagoon.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. Where did the lessons begin?
  2. What did they measure on the table?
  3. How much did the book weigh?
  4. Why did they go to the beach?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Maldivian?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
