Com arribar al centre

A short in Catalan text at level A2. The translation sits next to it: reading with a dictionary is still too early at this level, and without support it will not happen at all. This morning a tourist asked me how to get to the city center. I told her: take this street and go straight to the end…

Text

This morning a tourist asked me how to get to the city center. I told her: take this street and go straight to the end; at the crossroads turn right. The square is in front of the bridge, and the museum is on the other side of the street. "It is ten minutes on foot," I explained to her; "if you get tired, at the traffic light you can take bus number seven". She followed the advice, and ten minutes later sent me a photo of the square.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the tourist ask the narrator about?
  2. Where should one turn at the crossroads?
  3. How long is the walk to the center?
  4. What can one do at the traffic light if tired?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Catalan?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
